KUCHING – Sarawak’s burgeoning bioeconomy sector has reached a new milestone with the launch of its first locally produced, insect-based pet food. The product, named TERA Diet “Borneo Exclusive”, was introduced by SEDC Entopro Sdn Bhd at the National Bioeconomy Showcase 2025, held alongside the International Digital Economy Conference (IDECS) 2025.
The unveiling, witnessed by Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development II, Datuk Francis Harden Hollis, signifies a strategic advancement in the state’s goal to merge scientific research with sustainable commercial practices. This initiative is a tangible outcome of the state’s Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
Formulated using protein derived from Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae, the cat food offers a hypoallergenic and nutritionally rich alternative for pet owners. The development represents a dual-purpose innovation, addressing pet nutrition while promoting environmental sustainability through the use of insects that convert organic waste into valuable biomass.
In a speech delivered on his behalf, Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, emphasised that true innovation emerges when research is translated into practical products that serve the community.
“Innovation grows when we meet new people, exchange ideas, learn from one another, and turn those ideas into action,” the text read. He described it as the application of knowledge to improve lives, establish new industries, and create economic value.
The minister further noted that ventures like SEDC Entopro demonstrate how Sarawak’s natural and agricultural assets can be leveraged to develop commercial solutions. These initiatives simultaneously support sustainability, enhance food security, and build economic resilience. “By empowering innovative talent, we can unlock the potential of Sarawak’s rich biological resources,” he added.
This project is part of the SEDC Group’s wider commitment to driving Sarawak’s green transformation. The company’s operational model integrates biotechnology with advanced waste management, converting agricultural by-products into organic fertilisers and animal feed ingredients. This process strengthens local farming systems and improves environmental management.
The innovation aligns seamlessly with the state’s broader ambitions for a circular economy and is supported by the Sarawak Digital Economy Blueprint 2030. The blueprint encourages technology-led industries that carefully balance economic progress with ecological preservation.
TERA Diet was one of four new bio-based products presented at the showcase. It shared the platform with MIDIN Botanical Tea, TemTem Steamed Tempeh, and ProVMix. Collectively, these products are projected to achieve potential sales exceeding RM3 million within the next three years, highlighting the commercial viability of Sarawak’s bioeconomy.
