Sarawak Delegation Work Visit in Egypt

EGYPT – A high-level delegation from Sarawak has concluded a four-day working visit to Egypt, focusing on the welfare of Sarawakian students pursuing their studies abroad. The delegation was led by the Sarawak Government Secretary, Datuk Amar Mohd Abu Bakar Mazuki, who also serves as Vice Chairman of the Sarawak Foundation.

The official visit, which took place from the 27th to the 30th of October 2025, included representatives from both the Sarawak Foundation and the Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS).

A key objective of the trip was to strengthen collaborative ties with the Malaysian Embassy in Cairo and to gain first-hand insight into the living and learning conditions of students.

The itinerary featured a site inspection of the Asrama Kenyalang Sarawak Residence in Cairo, a dedicated accommodation facility for students from the state.

Furthermore, the officials held a meeting with Sarawakian scholars currently enrolled at various educational institutions in both Cairo and Alexandria, providing a platform to address their concerns and needs.

In a significant diplomatic engagement, the group met with the Malaysian Ambassador to Egypt, Datuk Mohd Tarisufian. Discussions centred on enhancing strategic cooperation to better safeguard the interests and well-being of the student community. These students are undertaking studies in a diverse range of disciplines at universities across Egypt.

The delegation included several prominent figures, such as Sarawak Attorney General Datuk Seri Shafie Ali and Sarawak Islamic Council President Datuk Misnutahar.

Also, present were Sarawak Mufti Datuk Jipri Yasin, alongside senior officers from the Sarawak Foundation and the Sarawak Islamic Religious Department.

Such overseas visits are considered crucial for state governments monitoring the welfare of their citizens studying in foreign countries.

Egypt has long been a popular destination for Malaysian students, particularly for those pursuing studies in Islamic sciences, medicine, and engineering. The direct engagement allows officials to assess the support systems in place and identify areas for improvement.

The involvement of multiple high-ranking officials underscores the importance the Sarawak government places on the welfare of its youth abroad.

These efforts form part of a broader commitment to human capital development, ensuring students can focus on their academic achievements in a supportive environment. The visit also reinforces the administrative relationship between state bodies and federal diplomatic missions.
