A ceremony was held at the Satria Pertiwi Complex on Thursday, 7 May 2026, to present the Sarawak Delta UNESCO Global Geopark (UGGp) Recognition Certificate to the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Abang Haji Openg.
The certificate was formally handed over by the Deputy Premier of Sarawak, YB Datuk Amar Awang Tengah bin Ali Hasan, who also serves as Minister of Natural Resources and Urban Development II and advisor to the Sarawak Delta UGGp.
The event marked a milestone achievement for Sarawak, reflecting nearly two decades of dedicated efforts to secure international recognition for its natural and cultural heritage.
A UNESCO Global Geopark is defined as an area containing geological sites and landscapes of outstanding international or national significance, managed holistically under the principles of conservation, education, and sustainable development.
The Sarawak Delta Geopark spans approximately 3,112 square kilometres and is home to remarkable geological formations, diverse ecosystems, and cultural heritage.
Among its highlights are orangutan habitats, unique biodiversity, and indigenous traditions that can be developed into sustainable tourism products.
This recognition represents a historic moment for Sarawak, achieved after 17 years of continuous work led by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Urban Development.
The designation enhances Sarawak’s visibility on the global stage, positioning the state as a leader in conservation and sustainable development while promoting its cultural identity.
Earlier, on 27 April 2026, a Sarawak delegation headed by YB Datuk Haji Len Talif Salleh, Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment, received the certificate from UNESCO in Paris.
The international recognition underscores Sarawak’s commitment to preserving its natural treasures while fostering educational opportunities and community-based development.
The Premier of Sarawak expressed appreciation for the recognition, noting that it reflects the collective dedication of government agencies, local communities, and stakeholders.
The achievement is expected to boost eco-tourism, strengthen conservation initiatives, and provide new opportunities for research and education.
The Sarawak Delta Geopark now joins the ranks of other UNESCO Global Geoparks worldwide, serving as a model for balancing environmental stewardship with socio-economic growth.
The recognition is anticipated to attract greater international attention, encouraging visitors and researchers to explore Sarawak’s rich geological and cultural landscape.
