KUCHING – A new digital platform designed to streamline the application process for foreign professionals seeking to work in Sarawak was officially launched this week. The system, known as the EXPRT Module, will manage applications for the Sarawak Employment Pass for Expatriates entirely online.
The initiative represents the latest advancement within the state’s broader ALIANCE digital governance ecosystem. It was announced during an Industry Update Programme held at the Hilton Hotel here, an event orchestrated by the Immigration and Labour Management Unit (ILMU) that gathered 190 representatives from various ministries, government bodies, and private sector industries.
Authorities have stated that the introduction of the module is a strategic move aligned with the Sarawak Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030). This long-term economic blueprint emphasises digital innovation and sustainable growth as core pillars for the state’s future.
Datuk Gerawat Gala, the Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring), articulated that the system underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing efficiency and transparency in public administration. He highlighted that the move towards digital governance is crucial for attracting global talent and fostering a business-friendly environment.
The EXPRT Module is the second significant component to go live under the ALIANCE framework. It follows the successful implementation of the SANSOLS platform earlier this year, which is dedicated to managing applications for Non-Resident Employees (NRE).
The performance of SANSOLS provides a promising precedent for the new expatriate-focused system. Since its launch, the SANSOLS platform has reportedly slashed processing times by a significant 70 per cent. The duration for approvals was reduced from 197 days to just 61 days, a change largely attributed to the platform’s seamless integration with the federal MyIMMs immigration system.
This integration has been pivotal in eliminating bureaucratic redundancies and providing applicants with real-time updates on their status. The new EXPRT Module aims to replicate this success for a different category of foreign workers, specifically targeting the recruitment of skilled expatriates.
By transitioning to a fully digital process, the government anticipates faster and more transparent handling of applications. The initial phase, covering new applications, is scheduled to commence operations on *1 November 2025*. Subsequent development will introduce online renewal capabilities, further simplifying the process for existing pass holders.
This digital shift is seen as a vital step in making Sarawak a more competitive destination for international investment and expertise. By modernising its immigration procedures, the state government hopes to address longstanding industry concerns regarding the speed and complexity of employing foreign specialists.
