Sarawak Showcases Digital Ambitions at MWC 2026 in Barcelona

BARCELONA – Sarawak has strengthened its global digital presence with a prominent showcase at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2026 in Barcelona, Spain.

The event highlighted the state’s commitment to advancing digital transformation and forging international collaborations.

During the official launch of the Sarawak Pavilion, Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication (Telecommunication) Datuk Liwan Lagang delivered a keynote address.

He reaffirmed the Sarawak Government’s determination to accelerate digital innovation and expand strategic partnerships.

Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi also underscored Sarawak’s ambition to position itself as a leading digital economy within ASEAN.

MWC 2026, recognised as one of the world’s most influential technology gatherings, provided Sarawak with a platform to showcase its digital ecosystem and investment potential.

The state highlighted progress in areas such as smart infrastructure, connectivity, artificial intelligence, renewable energy, and semiconductors.

Five memoranda of understanding were signed between Sarawak agencies and international technology firms. These included agreements between Sarawak Information Systems Sdn Bhd (SAINS) and Hewlett Packard (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd; Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) and Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd; Sarawak Artificial Intelligence Centre and Illamatica; as well as Sacofa Sdn Bhd with WorldSensing, S.L. and ZTE (Malaysia) Corporation Sdn Bhd.

The collaborations are expected to drive knowledge transfer, technology adoption, and capacity building, while opening new avenues for investment and innovation.

These initiatives align with Sarawak’s Post-Covid Development Strategy 2030 and the Sarawak Digital Economy Blueprint 2030, both of which aim to build a digitally empowered society and foster a resilient, innovation-driven economy.

Sarawak’s participation at MWC 2026 reflects its broader ambition to deepen international cooperation and strengthen its standing as a progressive digital hub in the region.

The state’s focus on renewable energy and semiconductors also signals its readiness to contribute to global technological advancements.

Among the delegation were Syed Mohamad Fauzi Shahab, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry; Dato Dr Anderson Tiong Ing Heng, General Manager of the Sarawak Multimedia Authority; Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Morshidi, Chairman of SDEC; Jafer Sadiq Abdul Lathif, Chief Executive Officer of Sacofa Sdn Bhd; and Andrew Chien Kai Bing, Chief Operating Officer of SAINS. Their presence underscored the state’s united effort to strengthen Sarawak’s digital economy on the global stage.

Through high-impact partnerships and international engagement, Sarawak continues to advance its vision of becoming a future-ready digital economy, firmly integrated into the global technology landscape.
