KUCHING – Sarawak is intensifying its push to become a regional semiconductor powerhouse with the upcoming Sarawak Semiconductor Syndication Session, set to take place on 21 July in Kuching. The event is spearheaded by Sarawak Microelectronic Design (SMD) Semiconductor, a state-owned entity, in collaboration with key ministries and industry stakeholders.

The session will gather over 40 participants, including representatives from federal and state agencies, educational and training institutions, and semiconductor industry players, all contributing towards realising Sarawak’s ambition to be the “Asian Silicon Nerve Centre.”

The syndication is a direct follow-up to the unveiling of the Sarawak Semiconductor Strategic Framework and Road Plan 2030: Beyond Moore’s Law, launched by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg at CSA Catapult, Wales in April.

Shariman Jamil, CEO of SMD, will lead the engagement and present the 10-step roadmap to establish a comprehensive semiconductor ecosystem by 2030. His presentation will also spotlight opportunities in chip design, R&D, and advanced packaging—sectors poised to generate high-income jobs and promote sustainable economic growth.

“This is not just a dream. It is already happening. We welcome all stakeholders to play their part in making Sarawak a global force in semiconductors,” said Shariman in a statement.

The programme, co-hosted by the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) and the Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment (MINTRED), adopts a bottom-up approach that prioritises local and global industry needs while empowering future talent.

Participants will also hear from Sean Redmond of Silicon Catalyst UK, who will share insights on the UK semiconductor landscape, along with experts from the UK Department of Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT).

Strategic proposals from the session will be formally submitted to the Premier of Sarawak, further strengthening the state’s semiconductor blueprint.
