KUCHING – Sarawak Energy has launched its Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) Excellence Week 2026, placing workplace safety, environmental responsibility and organisational standards at the centre of activities involving employees, contractors and strategic partners.

The programme, held at Menara Sarawak Energy, is being conducted under the theme “Saving Lives, Raising Standards, Nurturing Culture” and the shared objective of ensuring that “Everybody Goes Home Safely”.

The initiative is intended to reinforce the organisation’s approach to managing HSSE risks across its operations while encouraging employees and partners to maintain consistent safety standards in their respective workplaces.

Sarawak Energy Group Chief Executive Officer Designate Dato Ruslan Abdul Ghani and Department of Occupational Safety and Health Sarawak director Jamadi Yusup jointly launched the programme.

Group Chief Operating Officer Dato Ir James Ung, senior management representatives, strategic partners and other stakeholders also attended the launch.

HSSE Excellence Week provides a platform for discussions and activities covering several areas associated with workplace safety and environmental management.

The programme is designed to bring employees and business partners together to examine operational practices and reinforce awareness of potential risks.

Among the areas featured during the week is Human Performance Improvement, which focuses on understanding how people interact with work systems and how organisations can reduce the likelihood of errors and incidents.

Occupational safety and health will also form a significant part of the programme, with activities intended to reinforce safe working practices and awareness of workplace risks.

Employee wellbeing is another area included in the programme, recognising the connection between workforce health and a safe working environment.

Stakeholder engagement will also feature during the week, including activities involving contractors. Engagement with contractors is particularly relevant to organisations with extensive operational activities, as consistent safety expectations need to be understood and applied across different groups working within shared environments.

Environmental responsibility is another component of HSSE Excellence Week 2026. Sessions will cover biodiversity conservation and environmental stewardship, broadening the programme beyond occupational safety to include the environmental impacts and responsibilities associated with operational activities.

One of the programme’s highlights is Corporate Biodiversity Day, which includes the launch of the Sarawak Energy Biodiversity Information System, or SEBIS.

The system is intended to support the organisation’s approach to biodiversity information and environmental management.

The programme will also feature the GLC Occupational Safety and Health Summit, bringing together participants to discuss workplace safety matters within the government-linked company environment.

An Occupational Health Forum will address issues surrounding a drug-free workplace. The forum forms part of efforts to strengthen awareness of occupational health and encourage practices that support workplace safety.

Governance excellence is also included among the topics covered during the week, reflecting the broader role of management systems and organisational accountability in maintaining HSSE standards.

The activities come as Sarawak Energy continues to emphasise the management of health, safety, security and environmental risks across its operations.

Maintaining high standards requires ongoing monitoring, communication and participation from employees, management and external partners.

The organisation has also linked the programme to the development of a more mature HSSE culture, where safety considerations form part of routine decision-making rather than being treated as a separate operational responsibility.

A shared safety culture can be particularly important in complex operational environments where employees, contractors and other stakeholders may work across different locations and functions.

Consistent expectations and communication can help establish common approaches to identifying and managing risks.

The week-long programme therefore combines technical discussions, stakeholder engagement and environmental initiatives to address several aspects of HSSE management.

The activities are intended to strengthen awareness while providing opportunities for employees and partners to exchange knowledge and practices.

With the theme centred on saving lives, raising standards and nurturing culture, the programme places individual and collective responsibility at the heart of its safety message. The overarching objective remains that employees and partners return home safely after every working day. — Sarawak Daily
