Sarawak Esports Expo Aims to Shine as Global Gaming Hub by 2025

KUCHING (Dec 13): The Sarawak Esports Expo (Sarex) is on track to becoming one of the most prestigious esports events in the world, according to Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts.

Speaking at the opening of Sarex 2024 (Sarex24) at MBKS Event Ground today, Abdul Karim, whose speech was read by his deputy Datuk Snowdan Lawan, shared an ambitious vision for the event. He emphasized plans to elevate Sarex into a flagship annual event and include it in the state’s tourism calendar.

“To attract more international teams and sponsors, the prize pool will be increased from RM80,000 to RM100,000 next year,” said Abdul Karim. “We aim to grow this platform to inspire, lead, and establish Sarawak as a hub for esports in Southeast Asia.”

Since its inception in 2018, Sarex has transformed from a local initiative into a significant event that attracts participants from across Malaysia and Southeast Asia. Abdul Karim highlighted that esports is more than entertainment, calling it an economic driver and a platform for education, unity, and innovation.

“Sarawak is committed to nurturing this industry. Through Sarex24, we aim to empower youth, attract investments, and integrate esports into our tourism and creative strategies,” he added.

Sesa president Afiq Fadhil Narawi echoed this sentiment, noting that Sarex has grown into a platform showcasing Sarawak’s potential in digital innovation.

The three-day event features diverse tournaments, including PUBG Mobile (international), Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, Tekken 8, and more. It also offers interactive gaming zones, industry panels, workshops, and cultural showcases, blending Sarawak’s rich heritage with cutting-edge technology.

The expo has positioned itself as a networking hotspot for gamers, developers, and entrepreneurs, reinforcing Sarawak’s commitment to merging technology, culture, and community.
