KUCHING – A new guidance document designed to clarify environmental compliance for the forestry sector has been officially launched by the Sarawak Premier. The initiative aims to standardise the interpretation of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) stipulations for timber-related projects across the state.
The document was introduced during the National Environment Day 2025 celebrations, held at the Roxy Beach Resort in Sematan. It was developed through a collaboration between the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) and the Sarawak Timber Association (STA) Environmental Compliance Audit Working Group, with additional technical input from the Forest Department Sarawak.
In his address, Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg presided over the launch. The event highlighted the government’s continued focus on balancing economic development with ecological preservation.
This guidance is considered a critical tool for improving adherence to the Natural Resources and Environment (Audit) Rules 2008. Its publication comes as the sector prepares for the full implementation of mandatory Environmental Compliance Audits, which are set to begin on the 1st of July 2024.
Datu Jack Liam, the Sarawak Controller of Environmental Quality, provided welcoming remarks. He characterised the initiative as a proactive step that will aid both internal and external auditors. He stated that the document will help ensure that approved EIA terms and conditions are properly monitored and enforced, leading to measurable actions on the ground.
The guidance serves as a practical reference intended to bridge the gap between regulatory expectations and on-the-ground operational practices. This is particularly relevant for activities such as timber harvesting and the development of industrial forest plantations in sensitive hill forest areas.
As a living document, it is expected to be updated periodically. This will allow it to evolve in line with future regulatory refinements and changing industry needs. The initiative supports the state’s broader environmental stewardship goals while facilitating sustainable economic growth.
The collaboration between NREB and STA reinforces a long-standing partnership aimed at promoting responsible environmental practices. This effort also raises industry awareness and aligns with the state’s *Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030*.
The PCDS 2030 outlines a strategic path towards a high-income and sustainable economy for Sarawak by the end of the decade. Resilient and sustainable forest management is a key pillar of this overarching state strategy. The new guidance is seen as a tangible step towards achieving those long-term objectives.
