Sarawak Free Laptop Programme Expands to Benefit 5,700 Students

KUCHING – The Sarawak Government has launched the second phase of its Free Laptop Programme, set to benefit approximately 5,700 students across Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). The initiative, announced on 11 February 2026, involves an allocation of RM17 million and continues the state’s efforts to support digital access for young learners.

The symbolic handover ceremony was officiated by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg at the Satria Pertiwi Complex. Five students received laptops during the event, representing the thousands who will benefit from the programme.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dato Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman, a member of the Sarawak Foundation Board of Trustees, highlighted that this initiative builds upon the success of the first phase implemented last year. “For the year 2025 alone, the Sarawak Foundation distributed laptop assistance to more than 5,000 students,” he said, noting that the programme is among the most extensive educational support schemes ever introduced by the Foundation.

He further explained that the free laptop distribution is part of a wider framework of student-focused initiatives. These include book vouchers, financial assistance, free transportation services for school students, and school uniform support. Collectively, these measures aim to reduce the financial burden on families while ensuring students have the tools necessary to succeed academically.

The Sarawak Foundation Director, Datu Mohamad Junaidi bin Mohidin, and Deputy Director (Education), Watson Chunggat Leornard Doo, were also present at the ceremony, underscoring the Foundation’s commitment to strengthening educational opportunities across the state.

The Free Laptop Programme reflects Sarawak’s broader vision of digital inclusivity, ensuring that students from diverse backgrounds are not left behind in the digital age. Access to reliable technology has become increasingly vital for higher education, particularly with the growing emphasis on online learning, research, and digital collaboration.

By investing in student welfare, the Sarawak Government is not only addressing immediate educational needs but also laying the groundwork for a more digitally skilled workforce. This aligns with the state’s long-term development goals, which emphasise innovation, knowledge, and human capital growth.

The continuation of the programme demonstrates the government’s recognition of the challenges faced by students in adapting to modern learning environments. With thousands of laptops already distributed and more to come, the initiative is expected to have a lasting impact on educational equity and digital readiness in Sarawak.
