KUCHING: The Sarawak Government has launched a Free School Bus Programme as part of its wider effort to reduce traffic congestion, especially during peak school hours in urban areas. The initiative reflects the state’s practical approach to long-standing traffic issues caused by school pick-up and drop-off routines.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg said the programme was first introduced at Jalan Stapok, an area known for heavy traffic during school hours. Two schools were selected for the pilot phase, namely SJK Chung Hua 6 and Sekolah Kebangsaan Maong Hilir, both of which regularly experience congestion at the start and end of the school day.
Speaking to reporters after officiating the launch and opening of the Free School Bus and Smart Classroom Programme at SJK Chung Hua 6 on Monday, the Premier said the project was implemented in collaboration with local elected representatives. He explained that the main aim was to reduce the number of private vehicles on the road during school hours.
According to him, traffic data and vehicle tracking systems showed that traffic flow along Jalan Stapok improved when fewer parents drove their children to school. This confirmed that providing organised school transport could be an effective solution to congestion problems in busy urban areas.
The Premier also stressed that student safety remains a top priority. Each smart bus is equipped with a tracking system and communication devices that allow parents to monitor their children’s journey in real time. This use of technology gives parents peace of mind while ensuring children travel safely to and from school.
He added that the programme also helps families save on daily transportation costs, which can be a burden for working parents. With these benefits, the state government plans to gradually expand the bus service to other urban schools that frequently face traffic congestion.
Describing the initiative as a new and tested approach, Abang Zohari said its success depends on cooperation between the community, school authorities, and Parents and Teachers Associations. The government will bear the cost of buses and operational services to ensure the programme remains accessible.
When asked about the Free School Bus Programme under Yayasan Sarawak, the Premier said it would continue with improvements, particularly in addressing challenges related to student participation.
Also present at the event were Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian, Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, School Management Committee Chairman Dato Jonathan Chai Voon Tok, Free School Bus Programme Chairman See Chee How, and other dignitaries.
The programme marks another step by the Sarawak Government in using practical solutions and technology to improve daily life for students, parents, and the wider community. – UKAS
