Sarawak Gears Up for Grand Chinese New Year Celebration at BCCK

KUCHING, Jan 22 – The highly anticipated Sarawak-level Chinese New Year celebration will be held on Jan 29, marking the first day of the Lunar New Year with a vibrant open house at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) from 8.45am to 2pm.

The celebration will be hosted by the Sarawak government and graced by Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife, Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi. Joining them will be Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and other distinguished guests.

According to Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Hui Kian, the event underscores Sarawak’s commitment to fostering harmony among its diverse communities.
“In this Chinese New Year, we hope for prosperity, peace, and unity across our communities. Although 2025 may bring challenges, if we unite, we can turn them into opportunities for growth,” said Dr Sim.

The celebration features an exciting lineup of traditional Chinese performances, including a lion dance by the Sarawak Wushu and Lion Dance Association, and a special performance by the Oriental Chinese Orchestra. Renowned local artists such as Valerie Thiam, Ng Chien Chien, Ivando, Roxy Ixzy, and Hafizah will also entertain the crowd.

For those unable to attend, the event will be broadcast live on Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) via Facebook and YouTube.

Dr Sim highlighted the cultural richness of the celebration, even sharing a light-hearted moment about Premier Abang Johari’s ability to sing the popular Chinese song “月亮代表我的心” (The Moon Represents My Heart).

The event offers a chance for Sarawakians to come together and celebrate the spirit of Chinese New Year. Attendees are encouraged to join before 2pm as many will leave to celebrate with their families afterward.
