Sarawak Governor and Wife Engage with Shoppers at Emart Batu Kawa

KUCHING – The Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, together with his wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, made a weekend stop at Emart Batu Kawa Supermarket, drawing attention from shoppers and staff alike.

The visit, which took place at around 11.30 am, marked the couple’s first time at the popular retail hub. Although they had often heard about the supermarket from their children, this was their initial experience of the bustling shopping centre. Their daughter, Sharifah Fariah, accompanied them during the outing.

Upon arrival, the Governor and his wife were warmly received by Ngu Ting Sii, Managing Director of Emart Group, along with senior members of the company’s management team.

The supermarket, known as Sarawak’s first 24-hour shopping centre since its opening in 2014, has become a focal point for residents in Batu Kawa and beyond, offering a wide range of products and services under one roof.

During the visit, Tun Wan Junaidi purchased items in preparation for the upcoming 2026 Chinese New Year celebrations. The couple also toured the food court, which is recognised for its diverse culinary offerings.

The lively atmosphere reflected the supermarket’s role as a community hub, where families and individuals gather not only to shop but also to enjoy meals and social interaction.

Shoppers took the opportunity to greet the Governor and his wife, with many requesting photographs to mark the occasion. The approachable nature of the visit highlighted the couple’s effort to connect with the public in a casual setting.

Emart Batu Kawa, which spans over 350,000 square feet and houses more than 200 retail units, has been credited with boosting local commerce and providing employment opportunities.

Its motto, “Together We Are Stronger,” reflects its commitment to serving both individual customers and small businesses, strengthening its position as a vital part of Kuching’s retail landscape.

Speaking at the end of the visit, Tun Wan Junaidi expressed his gratitude to the supermarket’s management team.

“I extend my highest appreciation and gratitude to the top management of Emart Group for the good, friendly and professional service throughout this visit,” he said.

The Governor’s presence at Emart Batu Kawa underscored the importance of community engagement and highlighted the supermarket’s role in supporting Sarawak’s growing urban lifestyle.

The visit also reinforced the Governor’s ongoing efforts to remain close to the people, reflecting his commitment to inclusivity and accessibility in public life.
