KUCHING – The Governor of Sarawak, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, joined worshippers at the Sarawak State Mosque on March 20 for Friday prayers.
He was received on arrival by Datuk Haji Misnu Taha, President of the Sarawak Islamic Council, along with Datu Haji Khalidi Ibrahim, the Mufti of Sarawak, and Datu Haji Abdul Hadi Abdul Kadir, Chief Executive Officer of the Sarawak State Mosque Welfare Trust (LAKMNS). Mosque officers were also present to welcome him.
A number of prominent leaders were part of the congregation. Among them were Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg, Premier of Sarawak, Tan Sri Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar, Speaker of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly, Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan, Deputy Minister of Works Malaysia, and Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Husain, Honorary Secretary of LAKMNS.
The prayers were led by Dato Haji Mustapha Kamal Ahmad Fauzi, who also delivered a sermon titled “Ramadhan: Tibanya dinantingi, goginya dirindui.” The message focused on the meaning of Ramadan and the sense of longing and appreciation that comes with the holy month.
After the prayers, Tun Pehin Sri Wan Junaidi joined a funeral prayer for Katherina Majais, the younger sister of Dato Sri Naroden Majais, Advisor to MINTRED. His presence reflected support for the family during a time of loss.
He then spent time greeting members of the congregation, shaking hands and handing out small donations to children. The moment added a personal touch and strengthened his connection with the community.
Before leaving, the Governor and accompanying dignitaries visited an exhibition booth at the mosque. The display included historical information, updates, and a model of the new Masjid Jamek, which is under construction. The project is expected to improve facilities for worshippers and support the state’s growing needs.
Tun Pehin Sri Wan Junaidi later shared his appreciation for the opportunity to pray alongside the community, especially as Ramadan nears its end. He spoke about the value of shared worship in building unity and encouraged Muslims in Sarawak to continue holding on to strong values and deepening their understanding of their faith.
The visit forms part of a series of Ramadan engagements attended by the Governor, reflecting his ongoing role in bringing people together through faith and community.
