KUCHING – His Excellency the Governor of Sarawak, Tun Pehin Sri Dr. Haji Wan Junaidi bin Tuanku Jaafar, together with his spouse, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah binti Mohd Sanusi, welcomed a delegation from Singapore for a courtesy visit at his official residence in Petra Jaya today.
The delegation was led by His Excellency Vanu Gopala Menon, the Singapore High Commissioner to Malaysia.
Accompanying him were Ms. Charlene Chan, Counsellor (Political), Ms. Valerie Lim, Secretary (Political), and YBhg. Dato Fenny Nuli, Director of the Sarawak Regional Office, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia.
The meeting commenced at 10.00 am and extended for more than an hour, focusing on avenues for strategic collaboration between Sarawak and Singapore.
Key discussions revolved around regional cooperation, particularly in the development of a Green Economy and renewable energy initiatives in Sarawak.
Both parties explored ways to accelerate sustainable energy projects and investment opportunities in line with global environmental goals.
The proposal to establish a Singapore Consulate Office in Kuching was also raised, which aims to facilitate smoother trade, investment, and stronger people-to-people connections.
Analysts note that such a consulate could enhance bilateral relations and promote Sarawak as an attractive hub for Singaporean business and investment activities.
Tourism emerged as another major point of discussion. Sarawak, with its rich biodiversity, cultural heritage, and unique natural attractions, presents significant opportunities to attract visitors from Singapore and other countries.
Both parties emphasised the importance of collaborative marketing strategies and tourism promotion to boost arrivals and foster mutual economic benefits.
Reflecting on the meeting, Tun Pehin Sri Dr. Haji Wan Junaidi expressed optimism about the growing relationship. He said, “We hope that the strategic cooperation between Sarawak and Singapore will continue to be strengthened to drive sustainable economic growth and ensure long-term prosperity for both regions.”
The courtesy visit underlines the ongoing efforts by Sarawak to position itself as a forward-looking state with strong international partnerships.
Experts believe that closer ties with Singapore could accelerate developments in renewable energy, infrastructure, and trade, while also supporting cultural exchange and educational collaborations.
