KUCHING – Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, received a courtesy visit from the High Commissioner of Canada to Malaysia, his good self Jodi Rae Robinson, at Kasuma Resort, Petra Jaya (official residence), on Tuesday morning.
The two leaders met for over an hour to discuss a variety of issues. Topics discussed included Sarawak’s economic progress, renewable energy opportunities, and the role of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) in defining the country’s political landscape.
The Governor also shared his experiences as a former federal minister and gave a brief overview of Malaysia’s parliamentary system and governance.
Joining the Canadian delegation were Dato Fenny Nuli, Director of the Sarawak Regional Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Azhar Ali, Trade Commissioner at the High Commission of Canada in Kuala Lumpur; and Chai Li Yeang, Liaison Officer.
High Commissioner Robinson reiterated Canada’s willingness to support Sarawak’s priorities in energy, agriculture and aerospace.
She said that Canadian companies have expertise in sustainable mining and renewable energy, which could support Sarawak’s goals to grow its green economy.
Such collaboration would help strengthen bilateral ties, creating opportunities for technology transfer and knowledge sharing on both sides, Robinson said.
He hoped the cooperation based on trade and investment would also cover other aspects such as sustainable development and mutual prosperity between Sarawak and Canada.
He emphasised the need to forge partnerships that would be mutually beneficial for both communities, including areas like renewable energy, economic development and environmental stewardship.
Malaysia, along with Canada, has recently taken steps to strengthen their economic relationship after bilateral talks focused on investments involving liquefied natural gas, oil, nuclear and renewable energy.
The two countries have restated their dedication to boosting trade and energy partnerships under Canada’s Indo-Pacific strategy.
The courtesy visit is a testament to Sarawak’s increasing role in international diplomacy and its quest for foreign expertise to aid local development.
The meeting is anticipated to set the stage for future collaborations in sectors key to Sarawak’s sustainable development, with Canada also expressing strong interest in strategic cooperation.
