KUCHING – The Governor of Sarawak, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi bin Tuanku Jaafar, together with his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, received a farewell courtesy visit from Professor Datuk Dr Khairuddin Ab Hamid, Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Sarawak (UTS), and his wife, Datin Dayang Mariani Abang Zain, at Kasuma Resort on 16 March.
The visit marked the end of Professor Khairuddin’s tenure as head of UTS, a university owned by the Sarawak Government and based in Sibu. His leadership term ends this month.
During his time as vice-chancellor, UTS reached several milestones. The institution moved from Sarawak University of Technology College to full university status, strengthening its standing in higher education.
Student enrolment grew, with more Sarawakians choosing the university. Academic programmes, research output, and teaching standards also improved, helping UTS gain recognition as a technical university in Malaysia.
Professor Khairuddin thanked Tun Pehin Sri Wan Junaidi for his guidance and support during the years he led the university. As Chancellor of UTS, the Governor played an active role in encouraging the institution’s progress and development.
In response, the governor spoke about the need for inclusivity in higher education. Universities should recruit students from different communities so the state builds balanced human capital for future development.
He also stressed the value of a healthy work culture. Strong teamwork, discipline, and shared responsibility help organisations remain resilient while facing modern challenges.
Tun Pehin Sri Wan Junaidi and Toh Puan Fauziah expressed appreciation for Professor Khairuddin’s service and dedication to the university. They wished him success in the next chapter of his career and expressed confidence in his continued contributions to education and society.
Professor Khairuddin’s departure closes an important chapter for UTS. During his leadership, the institution grew into a key pillar in Sarawak’s higher education sector, producing skilled graduates and strengthening technical education in the state.
The farewell meeting at Kasuma Resort reflected the close relationship between UTS and the Governor’s office, highlighting the cooperation that supported the university’s growth over the years.
