KOTA SAMARAHAN – His Excellency the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi bin Tuanku Jaafar, together with his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah binti Mohd Sanusi, joined Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) residents for the Prime Iftar 2026 at the Tun Abang Salahuddin Islamic Centre (PITAS) on 12 March.
The event was attended by their daughters, Sharifah Nong-Jasima and Tasneem, alongside distinguished guests including Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Sulong bin Matjeraie, Chairman of the UNIMAS Board of Directors; Prof. Dr Ahmad Hata bin Rasit, Vice-Chancellor of UNIMAS, accompanied by his wife, Prof. Dr Ramlah binti Zainudin; and Datuk Ik@Pahon anak Joyik, Member of the UNIMAS Board of Directors, as well as other members of the university’s executive committee.
As Chancellor of UNIMAS, Tun Wan Junaidi officiated the UNIMAS 2026 Special Contribution Ihya’ Ramadan, which was distributed to mosques and suraus across Kuching and Samarahan. The initiative reflects UNIMAS’s commitment to supporting religious institutions and fostering community spirit during the holy month.
The evening began with a simple breaking of fast, followed by congregational Maghrib prayers. The gathering provided an opportunity for students, staff, and dignitaries to share fellowship in a spirit of unity and devotion.
In his remarks, Tun Wan Junaidi expressed hope that such events would continue to serve as platforms for strengthening friendships among UNIMAS members. He emphasised the importance of charitable practices and togetherness during Ramadan, noting that these values contribute to the well-being of society.
The Prime Iftar programme has become a significant annual event at UNIMAS, bringing together leaders, staff, and students to celebrate the holy month. By combining religious observance with acts of charity, the event underscores the university’s role in promoting inclusivity and community engagement.
Observers highlighted that the presence of the Head of State and his family added special meaning to the occasion, reinforcing the importance of leadership in nurturing social and spiritual values. The distribution of contributions to mosques and suraus further demonstrated UNIMAS’s commitment to extending the benefits of Ramadan beyond its campus.
As Ramadan continues, the Prime Iftar 2026 stands as a reminder of the values of generosity, unity, and faith that define the season, while strengthening the bonds between the university and the wider community.
