Sarawak Governor Welcomes Delegation Ahead of Nuzul Al-Quran Ceremony

KUCHING – Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar today received a courtesy visit from the organising committee for this year’s Nuzul Al-Quran celebration at the state level, which will be hosted on 6 March 2026, in Bandar Sri Aman Mosque.

The delegation, led by Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Regional Development and Islamic Affairs), made the presentation of the official invitation to the governor and his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi. The visit was held at the governor’s official residence in Petra Jaya.

Datuk Haji Misnu Taha (Sarawak Islamic Council chairman), Mahra Salleh (Sri Aman Division resident), Ustaz Abang Burhanuddin Abang Masuine (the Sarawak Department of Islamic Religion’s deputy director for policy) and Ustaz Haji Wan Shaifuddin Wan Madihi (its deputy director for operations).

Another religious observance that falls in the month of Ramadan is Nuzul Al-Quran, which commemorates the Quran being revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

In Sarawak, the state-level ceremony will take place at Masjid Bandar Sri Aman, a well-known mosque located in proximity to Fort Alice and the town hall within Sri Aman Division.

The ceremony will take place in the evening and carry the theme “Ummah Maju Makmur, Insan Berilmu Menjulang Kelestarian Alam”, in which it focuses on unity, knowledge and sustainability values.

The Governor said he was grateful to the organisers for their efforts to put this together and described it as an important means to restore moral values and create a knowledge-based society. He said the celebration must be used as an opportunity to unite Muslims in Sarawak while calling for the integration of Islamic teachings into cadres.

Apart from the attendance of other recognised figures, it is also reported that Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg, the Sarawak Premier, would attend the ceremony. The visit of important state leaders signifies the importance of the occasion to promote religious harmony and community spirit.

Nuzul Al-Quran is celebrated nationwide but is not a general holiday in Sarawak. Yet the state-level observance is one of the key events on the religious calendar, attracting participation across communities divided along caste lines.

Preparations for the programme are still ongoing to make sure that it can reflect the spiritual devotion and cultural unity that have become characteristic of Majlis Umrah Sarawak, where an annual event caters not only to those going on pilgrimage but also to the wider Muslim community in Sarawak.
