KUCHING – Sarawak is positioning itself as a significant contributor to regional economic integration, with its growing influence in the ASEAN framework and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). The state’s leadership has highlighted renewable energy, cross-border power supply, and property development as key drivers of this ambition.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg emphasised that Sarawak’s ability to export electricity to neighbouring regions demonstrates its credibility as a sustainable energy provider.
The state already supplies power to Sabah and West Kalimantan, with plans underway to extend connections to Brunei and Singapore through submarine cables.
“We are moving towards becoming a major player in the ASEAN Power Grid. Green energy will be a major catalyst for future economic growth including the property sector,” Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian said at the SHEDA 2025 Annual Dinner and Excellence Awards held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK).
The Premier noted that Sarawak’s strategic location and energy resources are expected to attract new investment, particularly benefiting the property sector.
He urged developers to focus on three priorities: identifying competitive strengths, taking calculated risks, and building strong reputations in the market.
In line with Malaysia’s broader development agenda, he also called for greater adoption of modern construction technologies.
The use of Industrialised Building System (IBS) and Building Information Modelling (BIM), he said, should be expanded to improve efficiency and sustainability in high-value projects by 2030.
“We can no longer be tied to the old ways. To move forward, we need to dare to try new approaches that are more efficient, sustainable and competitive,” he added.
The event also recognised achievements within the property industry. Double Dynasty Holdings Sdn Bhd received the Outstanding Award in the commercial development (Hotel) category for the Sheraton Kuching Hotel project.
Exal (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd was honoured for its SOL Estate Phase 1 project in the gated and guarded landed residence (large-scale) category.
Other winners included Elica Sdn Bhd, which earned the Merit Award for its Upton residential strata development, and Sunmow Development Sdn Bhd, which received Special Recognition for the My Residence 2 project. The SHEDA Bintulu Branch was presented with the CSR Leadership Award for its contributions to flood relief and education initiatives.
The SHEDA Property Man of the Year 2025 Award was awarded to Goh Kim Sin, Founder and Managing Director of Top Green Group of Companies, for his contributions to the industry.
Meanwhile, Lafrowda Properties Sdn Bhd was celebrated for winning the FIABCI Malaysia Property Award 2024, marking the first time a SHEDA Award recipient achieved national recognition.
The ceremony was attended by SHEDA President Dato Augustine Wong, Datuk Ir. John Yong Lock Ping, who chaired the organising committee, and Dato Ir. Sr Alex Ting Kuang Kuo, the Organising Chairman of the SHEDA Excellence Awards 2025.
Sarawak’s growing role in renewable energy and regional connectivity aligns with ASEAN’s long-term vision of an integrated power grid, which aims to enhance energy security and economic cooperation across Southeast Asia.
Analysts note that the state’s progress in green energy could also strengthen its position in attracting foreign investment, particularly in industries seeking sustainable growth opportunities.
With its expanding energy exports, property sector innovation, and recognition of industry leaders, Sarawak is steadily reinforcing its role as a rising player in the ASEAN economic landscape.
