CHINA – A Sarawak delegation led by Minister for Utility and Telecommunication (MUTS), Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, has embarked on a strategic mission to Guangzhou and Shenzhen, focusing on exploring integrated waste-to-energy technologies and pumped hydro energy storage systems.

The official visit included key site tours at the Guangzhou Fushan Circular Economy Industrial Park—home to the world’s largest incinerator power generation plant—and the Shenzhen Pumped Storage Power Station, one of China’s leading pumped hydro facilities.

In Guangzhou, the delegation received a comprehensive briefing on integrated waste-to-energy (WTE) systems, smart grid integration, and clean energy conversion processes designed to support sustainable utilities and urban electricity generation. The WTE system demonstrated how municipal waste is transformed into clean electricity, providing a scalable solution for future urban planning.

In Shenzhen, the team explored one of China’s most technologically advanced pumped hydro storage plants, a key component of China’s energy resilience strategy. Dato Sri Julaihi noted the relevance of such infrastructure for Sarawak’s growing renewable energy sector, especially as the state accelerates the integration of solar and hydro sources into its grid.

The visit also included a bilateral meeting with Shenzhen government officials led by Cao Saixian, Director General of the Shenzhen Foreign Affairs Office. Discussions focused on water and electricity supply, telecommunications, and ICT development, identifying potential areas of collaboration between Shenzhen and Sarawak.

“Shenzhen’s smart utility infrastructure and digital connectivity showcase practical applications of emerging technologies at scale—something Sarawak is eager to emulate,” said Dato Sri Julaihi.

The mission reinforces Sarawak’s commitment to enhancing energy security, embracing green technology, and forging international cooperation in sustainable utility development.
