KUCHING – Sarawak anticipates a significant reduction in hydrogen production costs as technological advancements mature, positioning the clean energy sector as a future cornerstone of the state’s economy.

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg identified high production expenses, particularly within the electrolysis process, as the primary hurdle currently facing the industry.

He delivered these remarks during the 40th Anniversary Dinner of the Sarawak Bumiputera Entrepreneurs Chamber (DUBS) at the Pullman Hotel Kuching on 4 October.

Despite current financial barriers, the Premier expressed strong confidence that innovation will inevitably drive down expenses. He drew parallels to the consumer electronics sector, noting how rapid technological progress historically transformed bulky, expensive computers and mobile phones into compact, affordable devices.

He noted, “It is indeed expensive right now, but technology will change that. Computers used to be large; now they are small. The same applies to phones. Technology will drive costs down.”

Sarawak holds a distinct geographical and infrastructural advantage in this emerging market. The state boasts abundant water resources, extensive hydropower capacity, and a growing portfolio of renewable energy sources.

These natural and structural assets can be leveraged to scale up hydrogen production once the underlying technology becomes more commercially competitive.

The administration emphasises that hydrogen should be viewed beyond a mere alternative fuel source. It represents a comprehensive industry capable of generating extensive value chains and spawning novel business opportunities.

“If we can produce hydrogen at a low cost, we can become a major player in this industry,” the Premier asserted.

To accelerate this transition, Sarawak has already forged strategic collaborations with several global leaders in clean energy. Partnerships with Japan, South Korea, Germany, and China are actively advancing research and development in hydrogen technology.

These international developments create tangible opportunities for domestic businesses to integrate into the burgeoning ecosystem. Local entrepreneurs are well-positioned to participate in specialised sectors, including technological support, facility maintenance, and the supply of essential components.

The global push towards decarbonisation continues to elevate the strategic importance of green hydrogen. As nations seek to meet stringent climate targets, demand for zero-emission energy carriers is projected to surge significantly.

By proactively addressing cost barriers through technological adoption, Sarawak aims to secure a competitive foothold in the international green energy market. This strategic foresight aligns with broader regional goals to diversify the economy beyond traditional resource extraction.

As the industry evolves, the state remains focused on fostering an environment where innovation and local enterprise can thrive alongside major international partnerships. — Sarawak Daily
