Sarawak's Major Infrastructure Projects to Advance Under 13th Malaysia Plan

Sarawak’s Major Infrastructure Projects to Advance Under 13th Malaysia Plan

KUCHING – The Sarawak region is set to witness the continuation and expansion of several large-scale infrastructure initiatives under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), reaffirming the government’s commitment to regional connectivity and disaster resilience.

Deputy Prime Minister and Petra Jaya Member of Parliament, Dato Sri Fadillah Yusof, confirmed the ongoing development of crucial transport and border facilities, including the Trans Borneo Highway, the Sabah-Sarawak Link Road (SSLR), and infrastructure projects along the Malaysia-Indonesia and Malaysia-Brunei borders.

Among the flagship undertakings is the Kuching Flood Mitigation Plan Project, expected to cost over RM2 billion. This major flood control initiative comprises three key components: the construction of canals, new bridges, and a modern barrage at Sungai Salak, aimed at preventing saltwater intrusion during high tides.

“The first phase has already been approved under the 5th Rolling Plan of the 12th Malaysia Plan, involving two packages. The expansion now includes the western region of Kuching, with tenders expected to begin this year and construction starting next year,” said Fadillah during the grand opening of HE Medical Clinic’s Kuching branch on Saturday.

Further infrastructure projects under the 13MP include erosion control measures in critical areas such as Sibu and Miri. Specific project details are expected to be announced following the national budget presentation.

On the topic of border development, Fadillah highlighted planned upgrades to road facilities and the construction of Immigration, Customs and Quarantine (ICQ) complexes to bolster connectivity and security in areas adjacent to Indonesia and Brunei.

Additionally, he acknowledged the pressing issue of doctor shortages in rural Sarawak and proposed initiatives to promote greater participation of locals in the healthcare sector as part of a long-term solution.

The Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW) and the Ministry of Works (KKR) will jointly oversee the implementation of these projects throughout the 13MP period, ensuring that Sarawak’s development keeps pace with national objectives.
