Kuching Set to Host Spectacular International Dragon & Lion Dance Cup 2025 This November

KUCHING, 22 October 2025 — The roar of drums, clashing cymbals, and vibrant colours will once again fill the air as Sarawak proudly hosts the Sarawak International Dragon and Lion Dance Cup 2025, set to take place on 1 and 2 November 2025 at the Ang Cheng Ho Multipurpose Hall, Batu Kawa.

The highly anticipated championship marks its second edition, following the tremendous success of last year’s inaugural event that drew massive participation and strong support from local and international teams.

Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports and Community Development (Youth and Sports), Datuk Snowdan Lawan, said the continued organisation of this event reflects Sarawak’s growing role as a hub for cultural and sports tourism.

“The success of the first edition has driven us to make this an annual highlight in Sarawak’s cultural calendar,” Snowdan said during a press conference held at Baitulmakmur II on Wednesday.

This year’s championship will feature 46 teams from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, and China, bringing together over 500 performers in a vibrant showcase of athleticism, discipline, and artistry.

Organised by the Chinese Martial Art Association (CMAA) and sanctioned by the Dragon & Lion Dance Federation of Malaysia, the event is supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (MTCP) and the Sarawak Dragon-Lion Dance & Wushu Association (PTNSWS).

The competition will see four major categories: Northern Lion Dance, High Pole Southern Lion Dance, Traditional Southern Lion Dance, and the mesmerizing Moonlight Dragon performance. A total of RM65,000 in cash prizes, trophies, and medals reflecting Sarawak’s cultural identity await the winners.

Among the competitors are world-renowned teams, including defending High Pole Southern Lion Dance champions from China and the Moonlight Dragon World Champion from Johor, ensuring spectators an unforgettable cultural spectacle.

Snowdan also expressed optimism about future connectivity improvements once AirBorneo, Sarawak’s planned airline, begins operations — a move that will strengthen Sarawak’s capacity to host more international events.

He also thanked sponsors such as Lee Onn, Aeroville Mall, Brilliance Construction, Big Canteen, and Rice Master, and encouraged more local corporations to lend support to elevate the event’s prestige.

Members of the public are invited to attend the event, with free admission, to experience firsthand one of Asia’s most thrilling cultural championships.

Event Schedule:

  • 1 Nov 2025 (12:00 pm – 1:00 pm) – Opening Ceremony & Northern Lion Dance
  • 1 Nov 2025 (2:00 pm – 6:00 pm) – High Pole Southern Lion Dance
  • 1 Nov 2025 (7:00 pm – 9:30 pm) – Moonlight Dragon Performance
  • 2 Nov 2025 (9:00 am – 7:00 pm) – Traditional Southern Lion Dance & Closing Ceremony
