KUCHING (March 22): In a united effort to promote environmental awareness, the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) and 25 local authorities across Sarawak switched off their lights tonight for the Joint Virtual Earth Hour 2025 programme.
The event, held via video conference, was hosted by the Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC), with MBKS and other councils participating remotely. This collective action underscores Sarawak’s commitment to sustainability and climate change awareness.
Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng highlighted the importance of Earth Hour as a global movement to encourage energy conservation and environmental responsibility.
“Our communities are working together to protect the future of our city, our state, our country, and our planet. From recycling waste to reducing electricity consumption, we are all committed to making the world a better place by adopting eco-friendly practices in our daily lives.
“Today, we are demonstrating how small actions can make a big difference, and how individuals can come together to drive collective change,” he said.
Earth Hour is an annual worldwide event where cities and organisations turn off non-essential lights for one hour to raise awareness of climate change and sustainability. This symbolic action serves as a reminder of the need for responsible energy consumption and environmental stewardship.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, delivering his speech via video conference in Sibu, encouraged the newly established Gedong District Council to prepare for participation in next year’s programme. He also announced that the Sri Aman District Council will be the official host of Earth Hour 2026.
“I trust that they will carry forward this initiative with the same dedication and commitment as SRDC, ensuring that next year’s event reaches even greater heights,” said Dr Sim in his text speech, read by Deputy Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Michael Tiang.
Sarawak’s participation in Earth Hour reflects the state’s growing commitment to green initiatives and climate action. With local councils actively engaging in sustainable practices, the movement is expected to inspire more communities to take part in preserving the environment.
