KUCHING: The Sarawak Ministry of Transport (MOTS) has reiterated its commitment to establishing a modern and integrated logistics ecosystem, positioning Sarawak as a regional logistics hub in the near future.
Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said logistics plays a pivotal role in trade and investment and serves as a major catalyst for Sarawak’s economic transformation, especially given the state’s vast geography and abundant natural resources.
“To support this vision, we are rolling out strategic initiatives to modernise and streamline logistics operations across land, sea, and air, while strengthening first-mile and last-mile connectivity,” he said during his speech at Hexagon Highs’ 20th Anniversary Dinner at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on Friday.
Dato Sri Lee noted that one of MOTS’ current key focus areas is to upgrade air cargo capacity at Kuching International Airport (LTAK).
The LTAK Cargo Terminal Redevelopment Plan addresses pressing issues such as congestion, limited operational space, and safety concerns. It includes:
- Expansion of the lorry parking area by 18,000 square feet
- Upgrades to cargo docks, rest zones, and supporting facilities
- Development of a dedicated DHL operating zone
- Full compliance with Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) safety standards
“This redevelopment will not only increase cargo throughput and operational security but also improve the working experience of logistics operators,” he added.
In Q1 2025, Sarawak recorded 14,438 tonnes in air cargo handling — a 23.3% increase from 11,072 tonnes in the same period last year.
Dato Sri Lee emphasised that this is only the beginning of Sarawak’s wider logistics transformation plan, which will see continued infrastructure upgrades and strategic partnerships aimed at achieving regional leadership in logistics.
