His Excellency Tun Pehin Sri Dr. Haji Wan Junaidi bin Tuanku Jaafar, the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak, and Her Most Gracious Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Binti Mohd Sanusi have expressed their heartfelt condolences to the Ritchie family. In a moving tribute, His Excellency honoured James Ritchie not only as a friend but as a fellow writer, cultural historian, and someone deeply connected to Sarawak’s identity.

“He was a loyal friend, a gifted storyteller, and the son of a man I greatly respected – the late Dato Sri John Ritchie, former Police Commissioner of Sarawak,” said His Excellency.

The bond between the Governor and the Ritchie family spans decades. His Excellency recalled their first meeting during his school years at St. Thomas’ Secondary School, Kuching, and how their friendship grew stronger over the years. He also remembered his time as Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to the late Dato Sri John Ritchie in 1968, a period that marked the start of a lifelong connection.

“I was treated not just as an officer, but as a member of their family. That connection formed the basis of a lifelong friendship with James,” His Excellency shared.

James Ritchie’s contribution to Sarawak’s literary and historical archive is monumental. He penned countless articles, books, and stories that captured the spirit of Borneo, from the life of its indigenous communities to tales of courage, struggle, and transformation in modern Sarawak. He was widely respected for his accurate reporting, deep cultural insights, and unwavering commitment to telling the truth.

“His voice and his vision will be missed, but his contributions will live on through his words,” said His Excellency and Toh Puan in their joint message.

Ritchie’s most recent project was particularly close to home – a biographical book chronicling the life and public service of Tun Pehin Sri Wan Junaidi. The two were scheduled to meet this coming Monday, 5 May 2025, to discuss the progress of the manuscript.

“We were looking forward to continuing the conversation, but God had other plans,” His Excellency remarked solemnly.

His Excellency and Toh Puan expressed sentiments, calling James Ritchie a “wonderful person” and remembering him as more than a journalist — as a co-author and cherished friend who often praised the Governor’s leadership and values.

“He was always very generous with words of praise on me. I will always remember and cherish the memory of him – the son of my Commissioner, a friend and co-writer in our books,” he said.

His Excellency and Toh Puan expressed hope that the Ritchie family will find strength during this difficult time. They extended their sympathies and prayers for healing, recalling how James’s life had impacted many across Sarawak and beyond.

As Sarawak mourns this significant loss, tributes continue to pour in from journalists, authors, cultural figures, and citizens whose lives were touched by James Ritchie’s work. His legacy is etched in the pages of Sarawak’s history — a legacy that will continue to inspire.

“May his family be surrounded by love and support as they go through this difficult time. May the cherished memories of your loved one bring solace and strength,” the Governor concluded. — TYT Sarawak
