MOTS Plans Statewide Traffic Parks to Boost Road Safety Under 13MP

KUCHING: The Sarawak Ministry of Transport (MOTS) is proposing to expand the number of traffic parks throughout Sarawak under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) to enhance road safety education among school students.

Sarawak Transport Minister, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, said this initiative aims to proactively cultivate a culture of safe road usage starting from school age.

“Under the 13th Malaysia Plan, we intend to increase traffic parks so that every part of Sarawak will have one,” he stated during the Opening Ceremony of the Sarawak Traffic Games Kuching 2025 on Saturday.

Currently, there are six traffic parks developed specifically for educating students on road safety, and the ministry plans to allocate funds to city councils and urbanisation councils to upgrade these existing parks.

Dato Sri Lee emphasized the importance of school participation in divisional-level traffic competitions to instill safe driving habits early.

“The learning environment mimics real road conditions. We observe students acting as if they are truly on the road, with traffic police presence issuing summons for offences — some students even cried after receiving summons,” he explained.

This approach has proven impactful and effective, prompting the ministry to take responsibility for reorganizing the programme, previously known as the Shell Traffic Games.

The revamped programme aims to minimise or eliminate road accidents by starting road safety education through simulated real-life scenarios at schools.
