The appointments mark a significant milestone in Sarawak’s journey toward best governance practices, as the state remains the first in Malaysia to legislate a dedicated Ombudsman system.

Alexander Unya Ambon was sworn in as Deputy Chief Ombudsman, effective 1 July 2025. Joining him are Albert Tang Yew Liong and Toieyah Tioh, who have been appointed as Ombudsman, with their terms beginning on 22 and 23 June 2025, respectively.

The official swearing-in ceremony was held on Monday at 10am at the Kuching High Court, presided over by Chief Justice of Sabah and Sarawak, Datuk Azizah Nawawi.

Also in attendance was Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Integrity and Ombudsman), Datuk Dr Juanda Jaya, who hailed the ceremony as a significant step in enhancing the public trust framework in Sarawak’s governance.

The appointments were made in line with Section 7 of the Sarawak Ombudsman Ordinance 2023, which mandates that all office-bearers must take an official oath before assuming their roles.

“This strengthens the function of the Ombudsman institution in upholding accountability and ensuring ethical conduct across all levels of administration,” said Dr Juanda.

The Sarawak Ombudsman Ordinance 2023—passed on 20 November 2023 by the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly—solidifies Sarawak’s pioneering stance in embedding checks and balances within its public sector through law.
