New Photobook Captures Sarawak’s Essence Through Imagery

KUCHING – The essence and cultural richness of Sarawak have been compiled into a prestigious new visual publication. The Snapshots of Sarawak coffee table book, an initiative spearheaded by the Photographic Society of Sibu with backing from the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (MTCP), was officially launched this week.

This high-quality volume serves as a tribute to the considerable photographic talent found within the state. It showcases nearly 300 striking images, the work of more than 70 professional image-makers, the majority of whom are Sarawakian natives. The collection provides an intimate visual journey through the region’s landscapes and traditions.

The photographs featured were selected from winning entries in several ministry-organised contests held between 2022 and 2024. These included the Sibu Heritage Photo Contest, the Enchanting Sarawak: Capturing the Heart of Borneo project, and the more recent Sarawak River Rides and Colours of Sarawak competitions. The book acts as a curated archive of the state’s recent photographic achievements.

Peter Lee Kueh Leng, President of the Photographic Society of Sibu, stressed that the publication is far more than an assemblage of attractive pictures. He described it as a dynamic record that narrates the authentic stories of the region, capturing scenes from traditional longhouse ceremonies and dense rainforests to the energetic atmosphere of its diverse cultural celebrations.

He explained that every image conveys a unique narrative about the local way of life, natural environment, culinary offerings, adventure opportunities, and historical legacy. The book is intended to function not only as a visual art piece but also as a potent instrument for promoting tourism, presenting Sarawak as a destination of international calibre.

A key objective behind the project is to foster a deeper appreciation amongst younger residents for their state’s unique identity and inherited traditions. It also aims to motivate both domestic and foreign visitors to seek out the lesser-known attractions scattered across Sarawak. The power of imagery, Lee noted, is its ability to ignite interest, deepen comprehension, and cultivate a sense of pride.

The launch event was held at the Baitulmakmur II building, where the deputy minister for youth, sports, and community development, Datuk Snowdan Lawan, also offered his endorsement. He characterised the photobook as a significant asset for the tourism sector, worthy of being displayed in hotels, government offices, and other establishments frequented by visitors.

He painted a picture of international guests discovering the book in their accommodations in cities like Kuching or Miri. In his view, perusing its pages would offer them a genuine understanding of Sarawak’s narrative, providing a powerful and authentic introduction to the state for a global audience. This initiative represents a strategic step towards enhancing Sarawak’s cultural and touristic profile.
