Sarawak Premier Hosts AIIB Delegation to Explore Future Infrastructure Ties

KUCHING – The Sarawak Chief Minister’s Office today played host to a delegation of senior officials from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) during their official courtesy visit on 6 February years, marking an important journey towards cooperation between the state and the international financial entity.

The dialogue was part of AIIB’s broader work in Malaysia to better understand national and state-level development priorities.

The bank has increasingly worked with Southeast Asian nations as it focuses on sustainable infrastructure and green investment across Asia.

Publicly available information indicates that AIIB has financed over 250 projects worldwide since inception, with a focus on clean energy and climate-resilient development.

In Kuching, talks revolved around the long-term economic trajectory and aspirations of Sarawak, especially in renewable energy, digital transformation and high technology.

The state government has identified these sectors to be among the pillars of Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 which is tasked towards developing Sarawak as a high income and environmentally sustainable economy.

AIIB alternate director Kim See Lim described the meeting with the Premier as giving more assurances to AIIB regarding Sarawak’s economic development path.

“After speaking with the Premier of Sarawak, we are convinced that indeed Sarawak is aspiring to make investment into next-generation technologies from renewable energy and their aspirations dovetail with AIIB’s mandate of investing and financing in tomorrow’s infrastructure. We look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead for us to contribute towards Sarawak’s development aspirations,” she said.

Her comments echo AIIB’s wider regional thinking, which is focused on low carbon energy, sustainable transport and digital connectivity.

Analysts say a strong utility base like Sarawak, which has hydropower capacity and hydrogen projects as well as the prospect of cross-border power sales, could position the state to obtain international funding.

Kim said the delegation appreciated having a closer look into Malaysia’s development dreams and Sarawak is seen as a good partner for future cooperation due to the state’s strides in energy and infrastructure developments.

The visit had enabled AIIB to gain more profound insights into how its financial instruments could help meet the needs not only of states but also the nation as a whole, she added.

She also emphasised the increasing importance of Sarawak in ASEAN, particularly in contributing towards regional connectivity and energy security.

The location of the state at a vantage point and growth in infrastructure has made we institutional investors to show interest in Long-term and Sustainable Investment Avenues.

The courtesy call is envisioned to open the door for more engagement between Sarawak and AIIB, including in renewable energy promotion, green transport and infrastructure rejuvenation. No specific projects were announced, but both parties sounded optimistic about future cooperation.

With Sarawak aspiring to establish itself as a clean energy and innovation leader, collaboration with multilateral agencies like AIIB will be instrumental in boosting its development agenda.
