KUCHING – The Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, welcomed the High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Malaysia, Manjurul Karim Khan Chowdhury, during a courtesy visit at Kompleks Satria Pertiwi on 15 April.
The meeting centred on strengthening economic and trade relations between Bangladesh and Malaysia, with Sarawak highlighted as a key area of focus.
Both sides discussed opportunities to expand cooperation in renewable energy, agriculture and labour, reflecting the growing importance of bilateral ties in supporting sustainable development.
Ambassador Chowdhury expressed Bangladesh’s interest in deepening collaboration with Sarawak, particularly in sectors that align with the state’s long-term growth strategies.
Renewable energy was identified as a promising area, given Sarawak’s ongoing investment in hydrogen, ammonia and other green technologies under its Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030.
Agriculture was also raised as a potential field for cooperation, with both parties recognising the importance of food security and sustainable farming practices.
Labour issues were discussed in the context of ensuring fair opportunities and strengthening workforce mobility between the two countries.
The Premier emphasised Sarawak’s commitment to building strong international partnerships that contribute to economic resilience and innovation.
He noted that closer ties with Bangladesh could open new avenues for trade and investment, while also fostering cultural and educational exchanges.
Observers highlighted that the visit reflects Sarawak’s broader diplomatic efforts to diversify its international relationships.
By engaging with Bangladesh, the state is seeking to expand its global reach and reinforce its role as a hub for investment and sustainable growth in Southeast Asia.
The courtesy call is expected to pave the way for more structured cooperation in the future, with both governments signalling readiness to explore practical initiatives that benefit their economies and communities.
