KUCHING – The Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Johari Tun Openg received a courtesy visit from FELDA Chairman Dato’ Sri Ahmad Shabery Cheek on 9 April 2026, with discussions centred on strengthening cooperation between the state and the Federal Land Development Authority (FELDA).
During the meeting, Ahmad Shabery highlighted that unlike other states, Sarawak does not have FELDA-planned land schemes. However, FELDA holds several assets in the state through FGV Holdings Berhad and its capitalisation cooperative.
He explained that these assets are being reviewed to determine whether they should remain under FELDA’s management or be adapted to meet current needs. Any decisions, he assured, would be communicated to the Sarawak Government to safeguard the state’s interests.
The talks also explored opportunities for collaboration in the green economy. With Sarawak advancing policies on renewable energy such as solar and hydro, as well as circular economy practices in plantations, FELDA expressed interest in aligning its expertise with the state’s sustainability agenda.
Ahmad Shabery noted that areas of common ground could pave the way for joint initiatives, including policy development at the federal level. Mechanisms such as carbon taxes and carbon credits were mentioned as potential areas for cooperation.
Another issue discussed was the Merdeka Palace Hotel, a historic property in Kuching. Ahmad Shabery confirmed that the sale process is in its final stages following successful negotiations with Permodalan Satok.
He expressed hope that the transfer would ensure the hotel continues to be preserved and managed in line with Sarawak’s priorities.
The meeting underscored the importance of asset management and sustainable development in shaping future cooperation. Both parties recognised the need to explore new opportunities that would benefit Sarawak while contributing to national strategies.
The Premier’s engagement with FELDA reflects Sarawak’s broader vision of balancing economic growth with environmental responsibility.
By fostering partnerships in renewable energy and sustainable practices, the state aims to position itself as a leader in green development while ensuring that federal assets within its borders are managed effectively.
This courtesy visit highlighted the ongoing commitment between Sarawak and FELDA to strengthen strategic ties, with a focus on sustainability, land ownership, and economic resilience.
