SINGAPORE – Sarawak’s Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, delivered a keynote address at the Philanthropy Summit in Singapore today, underscoring the state’s commitment to sustainable development and regional cooperation in clean energy.
The Premier’s speech centred on Sarawak’s efforts to balance economic progress with environmental responsibility.
He outlined how the state has been working to reduce carbon emissions while pursuing growth, stressing the importance of aligning policies, legislation, and institutions under a unified long-term vision.
This includes initiatives such as the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), the Sarawak Sustainability Action Plan, the Sarawak Energy Transition Policy, and the Sarawak Hydrogen Economy Roadmap.
Abang Zohari emphasised that Sarawak’s approach is not only about local transformation but also about contributing to global climate solutions.
He highlighted the role of cross-border energy cooperation and long-term capital investment in accelerating green growth, noting that Sarawak’s policies are designed to integrate economic resilience with environmental stewardship.
The summit, organised by the Philanthropy Asia Alliance, is being held from 18 to 20 May at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre, Marina Bay Sands.
It brings together leaders from philanthropy, business, and government to explore innovative solutions in climate, health, and inclusive development.
The event focuses on Asian innovations that can be replicated globally, positioning the region as a hub for sustainable progress.
Ahead of his keynote, the Premier met Singapore’s Minister for Manpower, Tan See Leng, to discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation.
The meeting reflected Sarawak’s broader strategy of building partnerships that extend beyond its borders, particularly in areas of energy, sustainability, and workforce development.
The Premier’s delegation included senior officials such as Deputy Secretary of the Sarawak Government (Economic Planning & Development) Dato Sri Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel, Acting Chief Executive Officer of Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd Malseni Jamal, Acting Permanent Secretary of the Sarawak Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Ts. Dr. Nurleyna Yunus, and Director of the Sarawak Climate Change and Energy Diplomacy Unit (SACED), Ir. Dr. Angelia Liew San Chuin. Their presence underscored the state’s commitment to presenting a united front in advancing its sustainability agenda.
Sarawak’s participation in the summit highlights its ambition to be a leader in renewable energy and sustainable development.
By showcasing its strategies and frameworks, the state aims to attract international collaboration and investment, reinforcing its role in shaping a greener future for the region.
