KUCHING – The Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, received a courtesy call from the Italian Ambassador to Malaysia, Raffaele Langella, at the Satria Pertiwi Complex on 15 April.
During the meeting, both sides explored opportunities for collaboration across several sectors, including renewable energy, trade, tourism, education and green technology.
The discussions reflected Sarawak’s growing interest in strengthening international partnerships that align with its long-term development strategies.
Ambassador Langella conveyed Italy’s commitment to expanding investment in Malaysia, with particular attention to Sarawak.
He highlighted the state’s potential in renewable energy and aerospace, sectors where Italian expertise and technology could play a significant role.
The Premier welcomed the ambassador’s remarks, stressing the importance of broadening Sarawak’s network of strategic cooperation.
He noted that partnerships of this nature could help accelerate economic growth while supporting innovation and sustainability.
Sarawak has been actively pursuing renewable energy initiatives, including hydrogen and green technology projects, as part of its Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030.
The state government views international collaboration as essential in achieving these goals, particularly in diversifying its economy and attracting foreign investment.
Tourism and education were also raised as areas of mutual interest. Italy’s cultural heritage and Sarawak’s diverse traditions provide opportunities for exchange programmes and joint initiatives that could strengthen people-to-people connections.
In education, collaboration could involve research partnerships and student mobility, enhancing knowledge transfer between institutions.
The Premier emphasised that Sarawak is open to building stronger ties with international partners who share its vision for sustainable growth.
He expressed optimism that the visit would pave the way for more concrete projects and long-term cooperation.
Observers noted that the meeting reflects Sarawak’s broader diplomatic efforts to position itself as a hub for investment and innovation in Southeast Asia.
By engaging with countries such as Italy, the state is seeking to expand its global reach while reinforcing its commitment to green development.
The courtesy visit is expected to mark the beginning of deeper collaboration, with both sides signalling readiness to explore practical initiatives that benefit their respective economies and societies.
