KUCHING – Staff of the Sarawak Premier’s Office extended their heartfelt congratulations to Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg after he was awarded the prestigious Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star by the Emperor of Japan.
The Premier was warmly welcomed by his staff upon arriving at the Satria Pertiwi Complex on Friday morning to resume official duties.
Leading the reception was his Senior Private Secretary, Datuk Haji Khir bin Haji Busrah, who conveyed the collective pride of the office in celebrating the Premier’s achievement.
The honour was conferred by Emperor Naruhito during a ceremony at the Tokyo Imperial Palace on 11 November.
The award is among the highest distinctions granted by the Japanese Government and recognises individuals who have made significant contributions to strengthening international relations and advancing Japanese diplomacy.
Abang Johari is the first Sarawakian from Borneo to receive the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star.
The recognition highlights his leadership in promoting cooperation between Sarawak and Japan, particularly in areas such as renewable energy, green hydrogen development, and investment partnerships.
Speaking after receiving the award, the Premier described the honour as one that belongs not only to him but to all Sarawakians.
“This recognition is a great honour for our people,” he said, underscoring the collective pride shared across the state.
The award reflects Japan’s acknowledgement of Sarawak’s role in advancing sustainable energy initiatives and fostering closer ties between the two nations.
It also reinforces Sarawak’s growing reputation as a leader in renewable energy innovation and international collaboration.
The ceremony and subsequent celebrations in Kuching marked a historic milestone for Sarawak, symbolising the state’s expanding global presence and the Premier’s enduring commitment to building strong international partnerships.
