Sarawak Premier Honoured with Japan’s Order of the Rising Sun

KUCHING – The Government of Japan has conferred the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star on Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, recognising his significant contributions to strengthening ties between Japan and Malaysia across multiple sectors.

The announcement was made in Tokyo as part of the 2025 Autumn Imperial Decorations, with the Japanese Embassy in Malaysia confirming the Premier’s inclusion among the distinguished recipients.

The award is one of Japan’s highest honours, traditionally bestowed upon individuals who have made outstanding efforts in promoting international relations, culture, and mutual understanding.

According to the Embassy, the recognition reflects Abang Johari’s leadership in advancing economic and energy cooperation, particularly in the renewable energy sector.

Under his stewardship, Sarawak has deepened collaboration with Japanese companies in areas such as hydrogen and ammonia development, while also ensuring stable supplies of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to support Japan’s long-term energy security and transition goals.

Beyond energy, the Premier has also been instrumental in environmental cooperation projects involving Japanese universities and organisations.

These initiatives have focused on forest conservation and biodiversity preservation, aligning with global sustainability priorities and reinforcing Sarawak’s role in environmental stewardship.

The Embassy further highlighted his efforts in academic and youth exchanges, which have fostered stronger cultural and educational ties between Sarawak and Japan.

These programmes have provided opportunities for young people to engage in cross-cultural learning, thereby strengthening grassroots understanding between the two societies.

The Japanese government noted that Abang Johari’s dedication and vision have left a lasting impact on bilateral relations, particularly in promoting regional exchanges and cooperation.

His leadership has been described as a driving force in building bridges between Sarawak and Japan, ensuring that collaboration extends beyond economics to include social and cultural dimensions.

The award ceremony is scheduled to take place on 11 November 2025, where the Sarawak Premier will officially receive the decoration.

This recognition places Abang Johari among a select group of Malaysian leaders who have been honoured by Japan for their role in advancing bilateral ties.

It also underscores Sarawak’s growing importance as a partner in renewable energy, environmental sustainability, and international cooperation.
