Sarawak Premier Honoured by Japan for Innovation and Global Leadership

TOKYO, JAPAN – Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg received one of Japan’s highest honours, The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star, in recognition of his contributions to economic cooperation, technology, and sustainable development.

The award, presented by Emperor Naruhito on Monday, not only acknowledged the Premier personally but also celebrated Sarawak’s achievements on the international stage. Speaking to the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) and TVS, Datuk Patinggi expressed his gratitude, noting that the recognition reflected the world’s confidence in Sarawak’s progress.

“I am honoured to receive this award. It is not only a recognition of my work but also of the people of Sarawak. Meeting Emperor Naruhito was a great moment, and he expressed pride in the strong ties between Japan and Malaysia,” he said.

Datuk Patinggi highlighted that the award also recognised Sarawak’s efforts in fostering economic growth, promoting environmental sustainability, and improving the well-being of its citizens. “This international recognition shows that Sarawak is advancing towards a new economy. We are aligned with nations pursuing policies that benefit both the environment and the people’s income,” he added.

He also emphasised the message this honour sends to Sarawakians: with determination and innovation, their achievements can gain global recognition. “Being the only recipient from Borneo, this award is a reminder that Sarawakians can excel on the world stage by exploring new fields and creating success,” he said.

Looking ahead, Datuk Patinggi revealed that Sarawak is exploring collaboration with Japan in fusion power technology following Japan’s successful new power tests. Talks with the Japan Malaysia Association and both Japanese and Malaysian Prime Ministers are planned to pursue this initiative, part of Sarawak’s green economy strategy focusing on innovation, technology, and sustainable energy.

“This is a significant step towards developing a new economy that combines innovation and sustainability, ensuring Sarawak remains at the forefront of global development,” he concluded. – UKAS
