KUCHING – Renewable energy has been positioned as the central pillar of Sarawak’s future economic strategy, with Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg emphasising its role in driving sustainable growth.
Speaking at the Yamada International Renewable Energy Investment Forum in Kuching, the Premier noted that Sarawak’s abundant natural resources and commitment to green transition have attracted strong interest from international investors.
He described renewable energy as the defining force that will shape the state’s development trajectory in the coming decades.
“We are providing the necessary facilities, and although this is still a developing industry, it aligns with our shift towards a new, green-based economy,” he said, underlining Sarawak’s determination to build a resilient and environmentally responsible economy.
The Premier highlighted Sarawak’s pioneering role in Malaysia, being the first state to enact legislation on waste collection and waste management.
This legal framework enables the transformation of waste into usable energy, turning environmental challenges into economic opportunities.
“This is part of the Sarawak Government’s approach turning waste into a valuable resource that can support our economic activities,” he added.
The forum drew participation from several Japanese companies, reflecting growing international confidence in Sarawak’s renewable energy sector.
Delegates explored opportunities in hydropower, solar, biomass, gas and hydrogen, all of which form part of Sarawak’s carbon management initiatives.
The Premier stressed that while Sarawak is rich in resources, technological collaboration is essential to fully unlock its renewable energy potential.
“We have the resources, but we need the technology providers. I hope this forum opens opportunities for integration between technology partners and our capabilities so that renewable energy can be produced at an affordable cost and shared with the ASEAN region,” he said.
Observers note that Sarawak’s renewable energy ambitions align with global trends towards decarbonisation and regional energy cooperation.
By leveraging its natural strengths and forging partnerships with international technology providers, Sarawak aims to position itself as a leader in clean energy within Southeast Asia.
The Premier’s remarks reinforced Sarawak’s broader vision of a green economy, where renewable energy not only drives industrial growth but also enhances environmental sustainability and regional prosperity.
