KUCHING – The Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, has been reappointed as Pro Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) for the period 2026 to 2029.
The reappointment letter was presented during a courtesy visit by UNIMAS top management, led by Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Sulong Matjeraie, Chairman of the Board of Directors, and Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Ahmad Hata Rasit.
The appointment was approved by the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak, who serves as Chancellor of UNIMAS, on the advice of the Minister of Higher Education.
This marks the fourth time the Premier has held the position since his first appointment in 2017, reflecting continued confidence in his leadership and commitment to advancing higher education in Sarawak.
During the session, the Vice-Chancellor shared updates on UNIMAS’s latest achievements in academics, research, and institutional development.
The university also introduced its newly established Faculty of Law, which becomes the 11th faculty at UNIMAS. The Dean of the Faculty, Professor Dato’ Dr Johan Shamsudin Sabaruddin, was formally introduced to the Premier.
The meeting also highlighted UNIMAS’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its role as a leading institution in Sarawak, focusing on innovation, research excellence, and expanding opportunities for students.
Present at the event were Professor Ir. Ts. Dr Al-Khalid Othman, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Student Affairs and Alumni; Professor Dr Fitri Suraya Mohamad Hapni Joblie, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic and International Affairs; and Tuan Haji Azlan Ramli, Registrar of UNIMAS.
The Premier’s reappointment underscores his longstanding support for education and his role in guiding UNIMAS towards greater achievements.
The establishment of the Faculty of Law further demonstrates the university’s commitment to broadening academic offerings and contributing to Sarawak’s development through education.
