KUCHING – Sarawak entered the New Year with renewed optimism as Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg reaffirmed the state’s commitment to achieving its Sarawak Advanced 2030 vision.
Speaking in conjunction with the Countdown 2026 Ceremony held at the Waterfront Hotel, the Premier highlighted the state’s progress in 2025 and outlined priorities for the year ahead.
The Premier noted that Sarawak had made significant strides in infrastructure, with more than 1,000 kilometres of new and upgraded roads completed by the end of 2025.
He emphasised that the full completion of the Pan Borneo Highway’s core section would not only improve safety and efficiency in travel but also stimulate economic opportunities across the state.
Digitalisation was another key focus, with the establishment of advanced data centres, adoption of artificial intelligence, and expansion of cloud services.
The Premier explained that these initiatives were complemented by improved e-government systems designed to be more accessible and efficient. He also stressed the importance of extending clean water, electricity, and internet coverage to rural and urban communities alike.
Human capital development remains central to the state’s agenda. The Premier reiterated that the Sarawak Free Higher Education Scheme (FTES) will commence in 2026, ensuring that more young Sarawakians can pursue higher education without financial constraints.
This initiative will be supported by technical and vocational education and training (TVET) programmes, alongside scholarships to broaden opportunities for students.
To address household needs, the Sarawak Government will continue the Sarawak Basic Needs Contribution (SKAS), with an increased allocation of RM640 million in 2026. This measure is aimed at easing the cost of living and supporting family welfare.
Environmental sustainability was also underscored. The Premier reaffirmed the government’s dedication to safeguarding forests, rivers, and biodiversity, while advancing clean energy projects to ensure long-term ecological balance.
He stressed that Sarawak’s strength lies not only in technological and economic progress but also in the unity of its diverse communities.
“Progress can be built with technology and capital, but Sarawak’s true strength is built from the hearts of its people who are united,” he said.
Looking ahead, the Premier described 2026 as a pivotal year in Sarawak’s journey towards becoming a developed state by 2030.
He pointed to the launch of AirBorneo, which is expected to enhance air connectivity, boost tourism, and facilitate trade and mobility.
In closing, Abang Johari expressed gratitude to Sarawakians for their cooperation throughout 2025 and urged continued harmony and determination in the coming year. “Happy New Year 2026! May Sarawak continue to progress, prosper and be blessed,” he said.
With these initiatives, Sarawak steps into 2026 with confidence, aiming to balance economic growth, social development, and environmental stewardship as it advances towards its long-term vision.
