Integrity and Teamwork Emphasised as Core of Sarawak Public Service

KUCHING — Civil servants in Sarawak have been urged to uphold integrity and teamwork as fundamental values in delivering government services, with state leaders stressing that public institutions must remain efficient and trustworthy to support regional growth.

Speaking at the Sarawak Land and Survey Department (JTS) Innovation and Integrity Day (HITS) 2025, State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki highlighted that integrity is not limited to preventing corruption or misconduct, but also extends to fostering respectful and cooperative relationships among staff.

He cautioned against unhealthy workplace practices such as gossip, backstabbing and forming divisive cliques, which he said could weaken the effectiveness of the public service. “When our intention to work is only to pursue recognition, praise or rank, then a negative culture is born… and this culture is very dangerous in the public service,” he noted.

Datuk Amar underscored that unity within departments is vital for improving service delivery and ensuring public agencies remain relevant. He called on civil servants, including those in JTS, to continuously enhance their skills and competencies, positioning the department as an essential driver of Sarawak’s long-term development agenda.

The HITS event, held on Wednesday at a Kuching hotel, also recognised excellence in service. A total of 100 JTS staff members from Kuching, Kota Samarahan and Serian were presented with the Excellent Service Award (APC) for their contributions.

The ceremony reinforced the state’s commitment to professional standards and effective governance, aligning with Sarawak’s broader efforts to strengthen public administration while advancing development initiatives under the 13th Malaysia Plan.
