Sarawak Strengthens Road Links and Infrastructure for Safer Connectivity

LAWAS – The Sarawak Government has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining top-quality road connectivity and infrastructure, recognising them as vital to ensuring public safety and driving socio-economic progress.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said these continuous improvements remain a key focus of the state’s development agenda, helping bridge rural and urban areas while promoting inclusive growth.

“This is not only essential for the safety of road users but also serves as one of the main catalysts for socio-economic advancement in Sarawak,” he said at the closing ceremony of the MyLesen B2 Driving Licence Assistance Programme for the N82 Bukit Sari constituency.

He explained that a number of infrastructure projects are being carried out in phases, including the landmark Pan Borneo Highway, which enhances inter-town connectivity, and the construction of major bridges aimed at replacing older ferry routes to ease travel and improve logistics.

During the event, Awang Tengah, who is also the Bukit Sari Assemblyman, reminded participants to uphold discipline and responsibility on the road.

“With a licence, you’re not only driving legally but also safeguarding your own life and those of others. Our lives are shared with the people we care about,” he said.

The MyLesen B2 Driving Licence Assistance Programme, organised by the Lawas District Road Transport Department (JPJ), has enabled 948 individuals to obtain motorcycle licences, providing access to safer mobility and legal compliance.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Transport Malaysia Datuk Hasbi Habibollah highlighted that the MyLesen initiative supports B40 groups by helping them secure driving licences at minimal cost.

He added that the programme enhances access to RON95 fuel subsidies and promotes road safety awareness among low-income citizens.

“This initiative not only boosts mobility but also ensures participants enjoy broader benefits under the national subsidy system,” he said.

The programme reflects ongoing efforts by both federal and state governments to improve accessibility, safety, and economic opportunities for Sarawak’s communities through well-structured transport initiatives.
