KOTA SAMARAHAN – The Sarawak Second Trunk Road Package A1-B project is progressing steadily, reflecting the state’s commitment to building a modern and resilient transport network.
The Director of Public Works, YBhg. Datu Adj. Prof. Ir. Ts. Gs. Br. PMr. Dr. Cassidy anak Morris, recently visited the project site in Samarahan to oversee its implementation and reaffirm the department’s dedication to supporting the Sarawak Government’s aspiration for safer and more reliable infrastructure.
The A1-B package covers the construction of a new four-lane, two-way road stretching 13.724 kilometres from CH8+150 to Batang Sadong.
A significant feature of the project is an elevated structure spanning approximately 11.4 kilometres, designed to mitigate flood risks in low-lying areas.
By adopting modern construction technologies, the elevated road is expected to enhance travel efficiency, reduce disruptions caused by seasonal flooding, and strengthen connectivity between coastal communities and major growth centres.
Beyond the elevated section, the project scope includes a 2.3-kilometre R5 embankment, comprehensive drainage and sewerage works, three bridges, a P-turn, traffic light intersections, street lighting, and road marking.
These elements are intended to ensure the road meets safety standards while accommodating future traffic demands.
The initiative is part of Sarawak’s broader infrastructure development strategy, which aims to improve accessibility across districts and support economic growth.
Enhanced road links are expected to benefit industries, businesses, and residents by reducing travel times and improving logistics.
Local stakeholders have welcomed the project, noting its potential to boost regional development and provide long-term resilience against environmental challenges.
The Second Trunk Road is seen as a vital addition to Sarawak’s transport system, complementing existing highways and supporting the state’s vision of a modern, sustainable network.
JKR Sarawak has emphasised that the project embodies its mission to deliver infrastructure that meets international standards while addressing local needs.
