Sarawak & Singapore Deepen Strategic Partnership with Focus on Green Economy

KUCHING — Sarawak has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening ties with Singapore, positioning the republic not only as a trading partner but also as a strategic gateway to global markets.

According to Deputy Secretary to the Sarawak Government (Operations), Datu Hii Chang Kee, Singapore’s role as a hub for trade, innovation, finance and international networking makes it an ideal complement to Sarawak’s resources, land, and talent development capacity.

“Sarawak hopes to collaborate by leveraging Singapore’s expertise in innovation, finance, logistics and technology, which will complement our strengths. Both parties can build partnerships that shape success, progress and sustainability,” he said.

Speaking at the Opening Ceremony of the Business Matching Session with the Singapore Trade and Tourism Office (STATOS) on Monday, Datu Hii highlighted that Sarawak is embarking on a new economic direction focused on the green economy.

Major investments are underway in Samalaju, Bintulu, particularly in hydrogen, methanol, ammonia, and green ammonia.

Sarawak also aims to share energy with neighbouring regions, reinforcing its ambition to become the “ASEAN battery”, supplying green energy to Brunei, Kalimantan, and Singapore.

With nearly 70% of Sarawak’s energy already coming from renewable sources, the state is well-positioned to meet global demand for sustainable energy.

Meanwhile, STATOS and the Singapore Malay Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SMCCI) co-organised a high-profile Business Mission to Kuching from 21 to 23 September 2025.

The mission brought together 15 Singaporean companies and 22 participants from sectors such as halal F&B, logistics, education, health, construction, digital technology, and the creative industry.

Also, present were Head of Mission and SMCCI Board Member Raja Mohamad, STATOS CEO Chew Chang Guan, and other dignitaries.
