KUCHING – The Sarawak State Education Department (JPN Sarawak) has successfully implemented a series of Smart Teaching and AI-Enhanced Teaching Workshops aimed at strengthening digital education transformation for STEM subject teachers.
The initiative, held across three zones in April 2026, involved 115 teachers from various districts and is part of efforts to nurture digitally fluent students in Sarawak.
The first workshop took place at IPGM Batu Lintang Campus, Kuching, from 14 to 16 April with 30 participants.
This was followed by the second session at SJK Tung Hua, Sibu, from 22 to 24 April, which engaged 50 teachers.
The final series was conducted at Kolej Tun Datu Tuanku Haji Bujang, Miri, from 28 to 30 April, involving 35 teachers.
The programme is aligned with the Digital Education Policy (DPD) and the Malaysia Education Plan (RPM) 2026–2035.
Its objectives include enhancing teachers’ digital literacy, bridging competency gaps between urban and rural educators, and promoting the safe and ethical use of artificial intelligence in classrooms.
Participants were introduced to innovative teaching methods and digital tools designed to support personalised and adaptive learning.
Training sessions covered the use of Canva AI for Educators, AI-assisted Daily Lesson Plans (RPH), digital teaching aids, interactive games, and other AI-powered applications.
These tools are intended to help teachers save time, analyse student progress more effectively, and deliver engaging lessons.
The workshops also emphasised the importance of cultivating Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) based on AI integration.
By fostering collaboration among educators, the programme aims to improve teaching efficiency, encourage innovation, and enhance the overall quality of STEM education delivery.
Expert speakers and facilitators contributed to the sessions, including YBrs Dr Ishak bin Johari from UPSI, Assoc. Prof. Ts Dr Alan Ting Huong Yong of University of Technology Sarawak (UTS), Mr Liong Chiong Kiong from SMK Lanang, and Mr Azrul Azeem bin Selamat from SK Gita.
Additional facilitators from schools and district education offices in Sibu and Miri also played key roles in guiding participants.
The Sarawak State Education Department expressed appreciation to IPGM Batu Lintang Campus, SJK Tung Hua, and Kolej Tun Datu Tuanku Haji Bujang for their cooperation and provision of facilities.
The department also congratulated the 115 teachers for their commitment to advancing STEM education and embracing digitalisation.
This initiative reflects Sarawak’s broader vision of preparing students for the digital era by equipping teachers with the skills and knowledge necessary to integrate AI into teaching and learning.
It marks a significant step in ensuring that education in Sarawak remains relevant, innovative, and globally competitive.
