KUCHING, 29 May – Sarawak has taken a big step towards a greener future by launching its first Sustainability Blueprint 2030. At the same time, the state proudly announced that it has already achieved its renewable energy goals for 2030 — seven years earlier than planned. These major announcements were made by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg during the Asia Carbon Conference 2025 held in Kuching.

The Premier said that climate change is now a real issue, not just a future problem. He explained that Sarawak is committed to playing a leading role in fighting climate change and building a strong green economy. Sarawak has now reached 70% renewable energy in its total power supply, thanks mostly to hydropower. This achievement has helped reduce carbon emissions from the electricity grid by 72% between 2010 and 2023.
The Premier added that Sarawak is not stopping there. The state is now investing in the hydrogen economy, floating solar farms, and mini-hydro projects to help bring electricity to rural areas. Sarawak is also encouraging more people to use electric vehicles. On top of that, the state is working closely with countries like Japan, South Korea, and China to grow its hydrogen energy sector and cut energy costs. These efforts aim to create more jobs and new business opportunities for the people of Sarawak.
One of the most important moments of the day was the launch of the Sarawak Sustainability Blueprint 2030. This is the first time any Malaysian state has created such a detailed plan for sustainable development. The blueprint was prepared by the Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability. It includes 10 main goals, 48 strategies, and 111 action plans. These cover areas like renewable energy, carbon capture, forest protection, green industries, and developing eco-friendly cities. It also focuses on education and training to prepare a skilled workforce for green jobs in the future.
Premier Abang Johari said this blueprint will help Sarawak build an economy that protects nature while also growing stronger. He hopes that the plan will inspire other states in Malaysia to take similar steps. Sarawak is also ready to support Malaysia during its ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025, which will focus on sustainability and inclusivity.
The Premier ended his speech by inviting investors, businesses, and experts from around the world to work together with Sarawak. He said that Sarawak is open for both business and collaboration. He believes that by working together, we can grow the economy while also protecting the environment for future generations.
Other important guests who attended the event included Dato Sri Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Youth & Sports Sarawak, Datuk Amar Haji Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Sarawak State Secretary, Datuk Dr Haji Hazland Abang Haji Hipni, Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Sarawak, H.E. Alejandro Rosselli Londono, Ambassador of Colombia, and Mr. Jamie Balderston, EVP Asia of Argus Media.
This new blueprint, along with Sarawak’s early success in renewable energy, proves that the state is serious about climate action. It also shows that economic development and environmental care can go hand in hand. Sarawak is not only planning for a better tomorrow—it’s already building it today. – Sarawakku
