Sarawak Explores Sustainable Financing to Advance Education Development

KUCHING – The Sarawak government is reviewing sustainable financing models to ensure that education development in the state can be carried out continuously and meet future demands.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg emphasised that the progress of a state should not be measured solely by physical infrastructure, but also by the strength of its human capital.

He noted that education plays a central role in shaping Sarawak’s competitiveness and innovation in a rapidly evolving global environment.

Speaking at the YAB Premier Sarawak 2025 Special Awards Ceremony at the Satria Pertiwi Complex, the Premier highlighted that investment in education is an investment in the future. “Sarawak’s development is not only seen in its progress, but in the quality of the people who develop it.

Investment for the future begins with producing an educated and high-minded generation. Although the future is increasingly challenging, it also provides bright opportunities for progress,” he said.

He further explained that challenges should be viewed as opportunities to cultivate resilience and creativity. “There are various challenges, but we can overcome them.

In fact, some challenges are beneficial and teach us to be stronger,” he remarked. The Premier stressed the importance of critical thinking and innovation, particularly among the younger generation, to ensure they remain relevant and capable of contributing to Sarawak’s growth.

“When we do not have critical thinking and do not think outside the box, that is what hinders progress. To think, we need to train our mental capabilities,” he added. He also noted that Sarawak’s reputation abroad would be strengthened if its people continue to innovate and embrace change.

The ceremony also featured a presentation by Datu Mohamad Junaidi, Director of the Sarawak Foundation, who reported encouraging educational achievements in 2024.

The SPM results showed improvement, with the State Average Grade (GPN) rising to 4.84, an increase of 0.08 points compared to the previous year.

The STPM performance was equally positive, recording an Overall Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.68. Notably, 92 candidates achieved a perfect CGPA of 4.00, while 12 schools recorded averages above 3.00.

The event was attended by several state leaders, including Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, Datuk Amar Haji Mohamad Abu Bakar bin Marzuki, and Datuk Dr Annuar bin Rapa’ee, underscoring the government’s collective commitment to advancing education as a cornerstone of Sarawak’s long-term development strategy.

By examining sustainable financing alternatives, the state aims to ensure that education remains inclusive, progressive, and capable of preparing future generations to meet global challenges while driving Sarawak’s socio-economic growth.
