Sarawak to Build State-of-the-Art International Airport in Tanjung Embang

Sarawak to Build State-of-the-Art International Airport in Tanjung Embang

KUCHING (Jan 19): Sarawak is set to welcome a new international airport in Tanjung Embang, Samarahan Division, a strategic location near a developing deep-sea port. Premier Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg made the announcement during the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Southern Zone Branch Delegates Meeting today.

The decision to select Tanjung Embang over Matang was based on logistical considerations. Premier Abang Johari explained that Matang faced airspace constraints near Indonesian territory, which would require international agreements and incur additional costs.

“Tanjung Embang offers the advantage of allowing flight operations entirely within Sarawak’s airspace. With this location, we can manage the airport and deep-sea port projects efficiently using our own funds,” he said.

The Premier highlighted that the new airport would feature world-class facilities, inspired by Doha’s Hamad International Airport. A dedicated committee, led by the Sarawak Financial Secretary, has been established to review proposals and oversee the project’s implementation.

Major Economic Boost for Sarawak

The transformative potential of the airport and deep-sea port projects is expected to significantly benefit Sarawak’s economy. Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, expressed optimism about the estimated RM100 billion investment.

“As Tanjung Embang is adjacent to Asajaya, I believe the spin-offs will positively impact Kuching, Samarahan, Serian, and surrounding areas. The airport’s development aligns with Sarawak’s vision of economic growth,” Abdul Karim said.

He further shared that these projects, likely fast-tracked under the 13th Malaysia Plan, will coincide with Sarawak launching its own airline this year. This comprehensive development aims to boost connectivity, infrastructure, and tourism, elevating Sarawak’s standing as a global destination.
