KUCHING, Jan 21: Sarawak is set to update its Building Ordinance by November 2025 to include progressive measures such as the Green Building Index (GBI), provisions for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, and improved fire safety standards. These amendments are part of a wider effort to enhance sustainability and safety for both new and existing buildings across the state.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, speaking at the Chinese New Year 2025 Fire Safety Campaign at Wisma Wan, Tabuan Jaya, highlighted the importance of aligning Sarawak’s building standards with modern needs. The event was organised by the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak.

The amendments will ensure that older and historical buildings also comply with the enhanced guidelines, particularly fire safety measures recommended by Bomba. Dr Sim assured building owners that they would be granted a grace period to meet the new regulations.

“Don’t worry—we’re accommodating and will allow sufficient time for building owners to comply with these updated guidelines,” he said.
He emphasised that the amendments aim to create uniform safety standards across Sarawak, reflecting the state’s commitment to sustainability and public safety.
“Fire doesn’t discriminate—it burns without regard for anyone. It’s time for our building ordinance to keep up with current demands,” Dr Sim added.
This initiative marks a significant step in Sarawak’s efforts to modernise its infrastructure while prioritising environmental and safety considerations.
The press conference was also attended by Bomba Sarawak Director Jamri Masran and Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng.
